Outdoor Sculpture in Auckland

This sculpture in total is about 8 feet by four feet high.  These “triangular” shapes are easily a foot across.  I appreciated the regularity of the piece, the patterns, and the connected shapes.  I like the hardness of the metal being formed in pillow like shaped with soft corners.  In cropping it I discovered these pinwheel like forms that I did not see when I looked at the entire sculpture.  I wonder what this would be like if each of the “triangles” were a different color.

Auckland at Night

I did finally decide that I have run out of material from December 15, but I feel proud to have searched for 5 images that I liked enough to post.  So I’ve gone back to the previous days to see what may have been left out.  What struck me out this one initially was the green halo on Vero peeking out between two buildings.  I also like the honeycomb shaping of the building to the right versus the horizontal of the one to the left and middle. I also like the reflection of lights in the other buildings.  What struck me though, was the lack of lights.  There are a few, but still very few compared to say New York or even Atlanta.  I appreciated being able to see the buildings without all this lights.  This close it likely would have been too much.

Landscape North Island

There are many wonderful landscape view in New Zealand.  What captured me in this one is the texture of the hills, the pile of stones to break the green up, and the harder texture of the field of crops in the foreground.  I also was drawn to the occasional dark green trees planted for a windbreak and because they stand alone, they look as if they are stretching to the sky.   Landscapes like these remind of quilts – sometimes regular orderly shapes and other times like crazy quilts.

Summer's Bounty

The 15 December was not one of our most prolific days for photographs.  I faced them thinking there will not be much to pull from since there is so little volume.  Yet, I am sticking with the discipline of going through them everyday to see what strikes me.  Today is such a day that I am glad I played by the rules.  I have ignored this photo a number of times thinking itw as just for the blog, but today I suddenly saw the cropping down to this tomato and corn.  Okay yes - I am missing summer and all the great things that go with it - especially locally grown produce.  Still in this photo, I love the gleam of the juice of the tomato and butter (yes REAL butter) on the corn against the flat green of the spinach.  I like the bright colors of red, yellow and green.  I like the roundness of the corn with the hard edges of the cut tomato.  I am grateful the corn is multi colored. It makes me smile and think of what is coming in a few months!

Three sisters

There are a number of better pictures of roses coming up on other days.  As I practiced, I started to get lucky, but as far as I can remember this is the only one where there were multiple roses lined up.  From this point forward I only took pictures of single roses.  What a shame!  I realized in playing with this one that I like the differences in colors and unfolding between the three roses – like they are three different ages.  The textures change with age and with this rose the pink is also more intense.  I like the baby girl is off center and there is a bit of the leaves peeking through.

Rainbow in Auckland

I appreciate the sun coming through brightly on the face of the building, but the dark sky behind - which of course makes it possible to have the water to create the rainbow and the backdrop to see it.  This photo does not show it as well, but this is the first time I have ever seen the entire spectrum of the rainbow - often the edges are lost - i.e. the purples and magentas.  I also like the shadow of the tree breaking up the order on the face of the building.

NZD 12152009

I like the trees in the foreground that give a vertical strength, but then further back, the bank is simply green.   The river also meanders to thr right and the clouds pick up the line into the sky.  I am refreshed by this one.
